~にして (and)

Japanese Grammar Advanced Japanese ★★ 2/5 formal にしてni shite
Reading にして
Romaji ni shite
Formation Noun A + にして + Noun B / な-Adjective stem A + にして + な-Adjective stem B

Meaning

A conjunction meaning 'and' or 'while being,' used to connect two noun phrases or な-adjective phrases to describe a single entity that possesses both qualities simultaneously.

にして in its conjunctive sense links two nouns or な-adjectives to characterize the same subject as embodying both qualities at once. It carries a formal, literary flavor and often highlights a combination that is impressive, surprising, or contrasting — for example, being both a scientist and an artist, or both elegant and powerful. It differs from で (casual 'and') and であり (formal 'and') in that にして adds a nuance of 'remarkably, this single entity is both.' It should not be confused with the temporal にして (at the age of) or the conditional にしては (considering). The pattern is common in biographical descriptions, literary prose, and formal introductions.

Examples

  1. 彼は科学者にして詩人でもあるという稀有な存在だ。 He is a rare individual who is both a scientist and a poet.
  2. この建築は壮大にして繊細な美しさを兼ね備えている。 This architecture combines grandeur and delicate beauty.
  3. 彼女は外交官にして著名な作家でもある。 She is a diplomat and also a renowned author.
