Japanese Grammar Advanced Japanese ★★ 2/5 formal にいたってはni itatte wa
Reading にいたっては
Romaji ni itatte wa
Formation Noun + にいたっては
Kanji breakdown 至 (いた) — reach, arrive at

Meaning

A compound particle used to single out an extreme case from a group of examples. It means 'as for (the extreme case of)' or 'when it comes to (the most extreme).'

にいたっては highlights one item as the most extreme or noteworthy case among several being discussed. The speaker typically lists a few items or situations and then uses にいたっては to present the most striking one. It almost always carries a negative or surprising connotation — the extreme example is worse, more remarkable, or more problematic than the others. It differs from に関しては, which neutrally introduces a topic, and from にかけては, which highlights exceptional ability. にいたっては is literary in tone and appears more often in formal writing, speeches, and essays than in casual conversation.

Examples

  1. 社員の士気は低く、管理職にいたっては会議にすら出席しない者もいる。 Employee morale is low, and as for the managers, some do not even attend meetings.
  2. 学生たちの成績は振るわず、最下位の生徒にいたっては白紙で提出していた。 The students' grades were poor, and as for the lowest-ranked student, they submitted a blank paper.
  3. 被害は広範囲に及び、沿岸部にいたっては壊滅的な状況だった。 The damage extended over a wide area, and as for the coastal regions, the situation was devastating.
