つましい
Meaning
Frugal; economical; thrifty; unpretentious. Describes someone living simply and without excess, often out of necessity or principle.
An i-adjective written in hiragana. Slightly different in nuance from 慎ましい (tsutsumashii), which emphasises dignified restraint; つましい focuses more on material frugality and getting by on little. It can imply a degree of hardship or poverty, though it is often used with warmth to describe admirable simplicity.
