覚束ない
Meaning
Doubtful; uncertain; unreliable; shaky. The kanji-written form of おぼつかない, emphasising dubious reliability or precarious footing.
The kanji form 覚束ない uses 覚 (awareness, certainty) and 束 (bundle, constraint) with the negation ない — literally 'not sufficiently certain or bundled together.' In formal writing and literary prose, the kanji form is preferred for its visual weight. The meaning is identical to おぼつかない, but the kanji form appears in more elevated registers and is more readily parsed by educated readers.
