Meaning

A versatile compound particle expressing means, cause, agent in passive sentences, or variation depending on circumstances. Equivalent to 'by,' 'due to,' 'depending on,' or 'according to.'

This is one of the most multifunctional compound particles in Japanese. It has four main uses: (1) means or method — indicating how something is done; (2) cause or reason — indicating why something happened; (3) agent of a passive sentence — indicating who performed the action; (4) variation or dependency — indicating that something changes depending on conditions. により is the more formal written variant of によって. The pre-nominal form による is used before nouns. Unlike で, which also marks means, によって is more formal and is preferred in written Japanese, especially in passive constructions and when discussing causes. Learners should master all four uses, as context determines which meaning applies.

• 天気によって関係なく試合は行われる。(Adding 関係なく after によって — this contradicts the dependency meaning; use にかかわらず instead) → 天気にかかわらず試合は行われる。
• 人により意見が違います。(Using により in casual speech — により is formal and better suited for writing) → 人によって意見が違います。
