~に代わって / ~に代わり
Meaning
Indicates that someone or something takes the place of another, expressing replacement or substitution. Equivalent to 'instead of,' 'in place of,' or 'on behalf of.'
This compound particle expresses that one person or thing substitutes for another. It has two main uses: acting on behalf of someone (representing them), and replacing something with a newer or different alternative. に代わって and に代わり are interchangeable, though に代わり is slightly more formal. The pre-nominal form に代わる is used before nouns. Unlike の代わりに, which is more casual and flexible, に代わって tends to imply a more formal or significant replacement and is frequently used in business, official, and news contexts.
