およそ
Meaning
An adverb with two main uses: as an approximation marker meaning 'approximately' or 'roughly,' and as a totality marker meaning 'at all' or 'utterly' when used with negatives. It adds a formal, measured tone to statements.
およそ has distinct uses depending on context. With numbers or quantities, it means 'approximately' — およそ三百人 (roughly 300 people). With negative predicates, it means 'not at all' or 'utterly not' — およそ理解できない (utterly incomprehensible). There is also a usage meaning 'generally' or 'in most cases' — およそ人間というものは (humans in general). Unlike だいたい, which is casual, およそ carries a more formal and sometimes literary flavour. It is also more emphatic than 約 when expressing approximation. The kanji form 凡そ appears in formal writing.
