いかに
Meaning
An adverb meaning 'how' or 'how much,' used to emphasise the degree or manner of something. It is more formal and literary than どんなに or どれほど and frequently appears in written Japanese and speeches.
いかに functions in two main ways. First, as an exclamatory or rhetorical intensifier meaning 'how very' — いかに困難であるか (how difficult it is). Second, as a conditional concession meaning 'no matter how' when paired with ~ても or ~とも — いかに努力しても (no matter how hard one tries). It is considerably more formal than どんなに and carries a weight suited to essays, editorials, and public addresses. The combination いかにも means 'indeed' or 'truly' and is a separate fixed expression. いかに often co-occurs with か to form indirect questions: いかに重要であるかを理解する.
