はたして

Japanese Grammar Advanced Japanese ★★★ 3/5 neutral はたしてhatashite
Reading はたして
Romaji hatashite
Formation はたして + Clause (confirmation) / はたして + Question Clause + か/だろうか

Meaning

An adverb with two uses: confirming that something occurred as expected ('as expected' or 'sure enough'), and expressing genuine doubt about whether something will happen or is true ('really?' or 'I wonder if'). Context determines which meaning applies.

はたして has two distinct functions. First, the confirmatory use: the speaker had a prediction, and the result matched it — はたして予想通り (sure enough, as predicted). Second, the dubitative use: the speaker genuinely questions whether something is possible or true — はたして実現できるのか (can it really be achieved?). The confirmatory use typically appears in past-tense narratives, while the dubitative use appears with question markers like か, だろうか, or のか. Unlike やはり, which confirms expectations with a neutral tone, はたして's confirmatory use carries a sense of dramatic reveal. The doubting use is more pointed than 本当に.
