反面
Meaning
A conjunction meaning 'on the other hand' or 'while,' used to contrast the positive and negative aspects, or two opposing qualities, of the same person, thing, or situation.
はんめん presents two sides of a single subject. Unlike 一方 (which can compare different subjects), 反面 specifically highlights that one entity possesses contradictory qualities simultaneously. It is frequently used to give a balanced evaluation — acknowledging a strength while pointing out an accompanying weakness, or vice versa. The clause before 反面 states one side, and the clause after states the opposite facet. It appears in both spoken and written Japanese but is slightly more common in written or formal assessments. In some contexts, その反面 is used at the start of the second clause for clarity.
Examples
- 彼は仕事に厳しい反面、部下への面倒見がよい。 He is strict about work, but on the other hand, he takes good care of his subordinates.
- リモートワークは自由度が高い反面、孤独感を覚えやすい。 Remote work offers a high degree of freedom, but on the other hand, it's easy to feel isolated.
- この薬は即効性がある反面、副作用も無視できない。 This medicine works quickly, but on the other hand, the side effects cannot be ignored.
