Japanese Grammar Advanced Japanese ★★★ 3/5 formal かのようにka no you ni
Reading かのように
Romaji ka no you ni
Formation Verb plain form / い-Adj / な-Adj である / Noun である + かのように

Meaning

A conjunctive phrase meaning 'as if' or 'as though,' used to form an adverbial clause describing the manner in which something appears or is done, despite not actually being the case.

かのように creates a simile by framing the preceding clause as a hypothetical scenario that describes the manner of the main action. It is more formal and literary than ~ように alone, and slightly less elevated than あたかも~かのように. The か is an embedded question particle ('whether'), の is a nominaliser, and ように means 'in the manner of.' Together they express 'in the manner as though it might be the case that...' It can modify verbs (かのように + verb), nouns (かのような + noun), or end a sentence predicatively (かのようだ). It is common in novels, essays, and formal descriptions. In casual speech, ~みたいに is preferred.

Examples

  1. 彼は自分が正しいかのように堂々と主張した。 He argued confidently as if he were in the right.
  2. 何年も会っていなかったかのように、二人は初対面のような挨拶を交わした。 As though they hadn't seen each other for years, the two exchanged greetings as if meeting for the first time.
  3. その子犬は人間の言葉がわかるかのように首をかしげた。 The puppy tilted its head as if it understood human speech.
