読み たのもしい
ローマ字 tanomoshii
漢字の分解 頼 (rai/tano) — rely, request, depend
発音 /ta.no.mo.ɕiː/

意味

Reliable; dependable; reassuring; promising. Describes a person or situation that inspires confident trust in their ability or future performance.

An i-adjective expressing warm confidence in another person's ability, character, or potential. 頼もしい味方 (a dependable ally), 頼もしい後輩 (a promising junior colleague) are common pairings. Also used of organisations or developments that give cause for encouragement. The emotion conveyed is a comforting reassurance—a sense that things will be alright because this person is capable. Contrasts with 心強い (heartening, courage-giving); 頼もしい emphasises trustworthy capability over emotional support.

例文

  1. 若いのにこれほど落ち着いた判断ができるとは、本当に頼もしい人材だ。
  2. 困難な交渉の場に同席してくれた先輩の存在が、どれほど頼もしかったか知れない。
  3. チームの最年少が率先して動く姿を見て、頼もしい成長を感じた。

起源と歴史

From 頼む (tanomu, to rely on/to request) with the i-adjective suffix もしい. The suffix conveys 'having the quality of' or 'worthy of' the base verb, so 頼もしい literally means 'worthy of being relied upon.' Attested from classical Japanese literature, where it described trustworthy patrons or allies.
