总 = 心 (heart) + 囱 (phonetic), overall; 统 = 糸 (silk/thread) + 充 (fill, phonetic), to unify or govern
含义
President (of a country). The head of state in a republic, such as the United States or France.
Used specifically for presidents of republics. In China, the head of state is called 国家主席, not 总统. 总统 is used when referring to foreign presidents or historical Chinese republic-era leaders. 总统大选 (presidential election) and 总统府 (presidential palace) are common collocations.
