含义

Chinese has three words for 'can': 会 (huì) for learned abilities and future likelihood, 能 (néng) for physical ability and circumstances, and 可以 (kěyǐ) for permission. Choosing the right one depends on the type of ability being expressed.

会 indicates a skill acquired through learning — 我会游泳 means 'I can swim' (I learned how). It also expresses future probability: 明天会下雨 (it will rain tomorrow). 能 indicates physical or circumstantial ability — 我能跑十公里 means 'I can run 10 km' (I have the physical capacity). It can also express permission in some contexts. 可以 primarily indicates permission — 你可以走了 means 'you may go now.' In negative form, 不会 means lack of skill, 不能 means inability or prohibition, and 不可以 means not permitted. A common mistake is using 会 for physical ability or 可以 for learned skills.

(Use 会 instead of 可以 for learned skills — 可以 implies permission, not acquired ability) → 我会说中文。
  • 这里不会停车。(Use 不能 or 不可以 for prohibition — 不会 means lacking a learned skill, not that parking is forbidden) → 这里不能停车。
  • 他很会跑步,能跑二十公里。(Use 能 for physical endurance and capacity — 很会跑步 implies skill or technique, not stamina) → 他很能跑,能跑二十公里。

起源与历史

会 originally meant 'to meet' or 'to gather,' and its ability sense developed from the idea of having acquired or gathered a skill. 能 depicted a bear (能 is an ancient pictograph of a bear) symbolizing strength and capability. 可以 combines 可 (permissible) with 以 (by means of), directly encoding the idea of being allowed to do something.
