在 + Verb (progressive)
含义
The particle 在 (zài) is placed before a verb to indicate that an action is currently in progress. It functions similarly to the English present continuous tense (-ing form).
When 在 is used before a verb, it marks the action as ongoing at the moment of speaking. It is often paired with 正 (zhèng) or 呢 (ne) for emphasis, forming patterns like 正在...呢. Unlike English, this progressive form is not used for future arrangements. Note that 在 as a progressive marker is different from 在 as a preposition meaning 'at/in.' The progressive 在 always comes directly before the verb, while the locative 在 is followed by a place noun.
