在 + Verb (progressive)

Chinese Grammar Basic Chinese ★★★★★ 5/5 neutral zài
Pinyin zài
Formation Subject + (正)在 + Verb + Object + (呢)
Hanzi breakdown 在 = 土 (earth) + 才 (talent)

Meaning

The particle 在 (zài) is placed before a verb to indicate that an action is currently in progress. It functions similarly to the English present continuous tense (-ing form).

When 在 is used before a verb, it marks the action as ongoing at the moment of speaking. It is often paired with 正 (zhèng) or 呢 (ne) for emphasis, forming patterns like 正在...呢. Unlike English, this progressive form is not used for future arrangements. Note that 在 as a progressive marker is different from 在 as a preposition meaning 'at/in.' The progressive 在 always comes directly before the verb, while the locative 在 is followed by a place noun.

Examples

  1. 她在看一本小说。 She is reading a novel.
  2. 爸爸在客厅看电视呢。 Dad is watching TV in the living room.
  3. 同学们在操场上跑步。 The classmates are running on the playground.
