棚上げ
Meaning
Shelving; putting aside; tabling; deferring. The deliberate postponement of a decision, problem, or agenda item to a later date.
Used as a noun or with する (棚上げにする / 棚上げする). In diplomatic contexts it describes the intentional suspension of contentious issues to allow cooperation to proceed — Japan's approach to the Senkaku Islands dispute is a classic example. In business meetings, it signals that a topic will not be resolved in the current session. Carries a pragmatic rather than evasive nuance.
