元本
Meaning
Principal; capital; original investment. The original sum of money borrowed or invested, excluding any interest or returns.
A foundational term in finance and lending. In loan repayment, payments are divided into 元本 (principal) and 利息 (interest). 元本保証 (guaranteed principal) means an investment promises to return at least the original sum. 元本割れ (shortfall below principal) describes a situation where an investment returns less than originally invested. Awareness of 元本リスク is essential for financial literacy.
Examples

- ローンの返済では、まず利息が優先され、その後に元本が充当される仕組みになっている。 In loan repayments, interest is prioritised first, with amounts subsequently applied to the principal.
