系列
Meaning
Keiretsu; affiliated group; series; a network of businesses with interlocking relationships and shareholdings, typically organised around a major bank or manufacturer.
The keiretsu system is one of the defining features of post-war Japanese capitalism. Horizontal keiretsu (横の系列) link companies across industries around a main bank (e.g., Mitsubishi group); vertical keiretsu (縦の系列) connect manufacturers with their dedicated suppliers and distributors (e.g., Toyota's supplier network). Cross-shareholding (相互株式保有) and preferential trading relationships characterise the system. Globalisation has weakened but not eliminated keiretsu ties.
Examples
- 系列企業間での相互株式保有は、外部からの敵対的買収を防ぐ役割を果たしてきた。 Cross-shareholding among affiliated group companies has served to defend against hostile takeover bids from outside.
- 日本の自動車産業の競争力は、緊密な系列サプライヤーとの長期的関係に支えられてきた。 The competitiveness of Japan's automotive industry has been underpinned by long-term relationships with its closely-knit keiretsu suppliers.
- グローバル化が進むにつれ、系列の結束が弱まりつつある業界も増えてきた。 As globalisation advances, there are a growing number of industries in which the cohesion of keiretsu ties is beginning to weaken.
