陰湿
Meaning
Insidious; underhanded; malicious; persistently harmful. Describes behaviour that operates covertly and is difficult to confront directly.
A na-adjective with strong negative connotations, describing harassment or cruelty that works in the shadows rather than openly. The literal meaning encompasses darkness and dampness (陰 — dark, 湿 — damp), evoking something festering unseen. Particularly common in discussions of workplace bullying (パワハラ) and school bullying (いじめ).
