も (emphasis)
Meaning
A particle used to add emphasis, often implying an unexpectedly large or small quantity, or stressing that even a particular element meets a certain condition. Similar to English 'as many as,' 'even,' or 'not even.'
When attached to quantities or specific nouns, も can express surprise or emphasis about the amount or degree. 三時間も待った means 'I waited for as long as three hours' (implying that is a lot). 百人も来た means 'as many as a hundred people came.' In negative sentences, も with question words creates strong negation: 何も食べなかった (I didn't eat anything at all), 誰も来なかった (nobody came). This emphatic も can also stress the unexpectedness of a situation: 子供にもわかる (even a child can understand). The difference from the 'also' meaning is contextual — emphatic も often pairs with large numbers, question words in negation, or に/でも constructions.
Examples
- 昨日は十時間も寝てしまった。 I ended up sleeping for as long as ten hours yesterday.
- パーティーに五十人も集まった。 As many as fifty people gathered at the party.
- あの映画は三回も見ました。 I watched that movie as many as three times.

The emphatic use of も developed naturally from its inclusive meaning of 'also/even.' If something applies 'even' to an extreme case, the emphasis follows logically. This broadening occurred in the medieval period.
