に (existence location)

Japanese Grammar Basic Japanese ★★★★★ 5/5 neutral ni
Reading
Romaji ni
Formation Place + に + Existence verb (いる, ある, 住む, etc.)

Meaning

A particle that indicates the location where someone or something exists. It is used exclusively with existence verbs such as いる (for animate beings) and ある (for inanimate objects).

This に marks the place where a person, animal, or thing is located when used with the verbs いる and ある. It answers the question 'where is X?' The important distinction from で is that に is used for static existence, while で marks the location of an action. For example, 公園にいる means 'to be at the park' (existing there), while 公園で遊ぶ means 'to play at the park' (performing an action). This に also appears with 住む (to live) and other verbs that describe a state of being in a location. Learners frequently confuse に and で in location contexts — the key is whether existence or activity is being described.

Examples

  1. 猫がベッドの上にいます。 The cat is on the bed.
  2. 駅の近くにコンビニがある。 There is a convenience store near the station.
  3. 兄は大阪に住んでいます。 My older brother lives in Osaka.
