Formation Place + で + Action verb

Meaning

A particle that indicates the location where an action or event takes place. Unlike に, which marks the location of existence, で is used when something is actively happening at that location.

This で answers the question 'where does the action happen?' It is used with action verbs like 食べる, 遊ぶ, 働く, 勉強する, and 買う. The critical distinction from に is that で implies an activity is being performed, while に marks static existence. Compare 図書館で勉強する (study at the library — an action) with 図書館にいる (be at the library — existence). Events also use で: 東京でオリンピックが開かれた (the Olympics were held in Tokyo). A common mistake is using に when an action is being performed — learners must ask whether the sentence describes being somewhere or doing something somewhere.

Examples

  1. レストランで晩ごはんを食べました。 I ate dinner at a restaurant.
  2. 図書館で三時間勉強した。 I studied at the library for three hours.
  3. 公園で友達とサッカーをした。 I played soccer with friends at the park.
