と (reciprocal)
Meaning
A particle that marks the person or entity with whom an action is done together or reciprocally. It indicates a partner in mutual actions such as meeting, talking, playing, or fighting.
This と marks the companion or counterpart in reciprocal actions. Common patterns include 友達と話す (talk with a friend), 彼と会う (meet him), 妹と遊ぶ (play with my little sister), and チームと戦う (fight against a team). The action must involve mutual participation — both parties are engaged. This と is sometimes interchangeable with ~と一緒に for emphasis on togetherness. An important distinction from を is in verbs like 結婚する: 彼と結婚する (marry him — reciprocal) is correct, while 彼を結婚する is grammatically wrong. Similarly, 友達と会う (meet with a friend) is natural, whereas 友達を会う is incorrect. Some learners confuse this with に, but に implies one-directional action toward someone.
Examples
- 昨日クラスメートと映画を見た。 I watched a movie with a classmate yesterday.
- 週末に友達と会う約束がある。 I have plans to meet a friend on the weekend.
