~ようものなら
Meaning
A hypothetical conditional meaning 'if one were to dare' or 'should one happen to.' It presents an undesirable hypothetical action and warns of the serious negative consequences that would follow.
ようものなら combines the volitional form with ものなら to create a strong warning about a hypothetical scenario. The もの adds emotional weight, suggesting the action would be reckless or unwise, while なら frames it as conditional. The main clause invariably describes severe, often disproportionate negative consequences. This pattern is used to caution, threaten, or emphasise how strictly something is enforced. It differs from たら or ば conditionals because it inherently carries the speaker's judgment that the action should not be taken. The volitional form is required — using the dictionary form is a common learner error. The pattern is productive in both spoken warnings and written cautionary statements.
Examples
- 締め切りを一日でも過ぎようものなら、契約が解除される恐れがある。 If one were to miss the deadline by even a single day, there is a risk of the contract being terminated.
- 機密情報を外部に漏らそうものなら、即座に懲戒処分の対象になる。 Should one leak confidential information externally, one would immediately face disciplinary action.
- 上司の前で居眠りしようものなら、二度と信頼を取り戻せないだろう。 If one were to doze off in front of the boss, one would probably never regain their trust.
