(っ)たって (1)
Meaning
The informal, colloquial equivalent of ても, meaning 'even if' or 'no matter how much.' It expresses concession in casual speech, indicating that the result stays the same regardless of the condition.
たって is a contraction of ても that originated in Edo-period Tokyo dialect and became standard in informal modern Japanese. It attaches to the same verb stem that precedes た: for example, 飲んだ becomes 飲んだって, 行った becomes 行ったって. For い-adjectives, the pattern is く + たって (高くたって). For nouns and な-adjectives, だったって is used. The pattern frequently pairs with いくら, どんなに, 何度, and similar intensifiers. While ても is appropriate across all registers, たって is restricted to casual conversation and would sound out of place in formal writing or speeches. Learners often mistakenly attach たって to the dictionary form rather than the た-form stem.
Examples
- いくら頼んだって、あの人は絶対に意見を変えない。 No matter how much you ask, that person will never change their mind.
- 今さら後悔したって、もう取り消しはできないよ。 Even if you regret it now, you can't undo it any more.
- どんなに走ったって、あの電車には間に合わないだろう。 No matter how fast you run, you probably won't make that train.
