~に~ない

Japanese Grammar Advanced Japanese ★★★ 3/5 neutral にないni ~ nai
Reading にない
Romaji ni ~ nai
Formation Verb dictionary form + に + same Verb potential negative

Meaning

A structure meaning 'cannot manage to do something' or 'unable to bring oneself to do something.' The same verb appears twice — once in the に-form and once in the negative — to express difficulty.

The ~に~ない pattern repeats the same verb: the first instance in a purpose/manner form (連用形 + に), and the second in the potential negative. This creates an emphatic expression of inability — not just lacking the physical ability, but being unable to bring oneself to act due to circumstances, emotions, or social constraints. Common examples include 言うに言えない (cannot bring oneself to say), 泣くに泣けない (cannot even cry though wanting to), and 引くに引けない (cannot back down). It often conveys a sense of being trapped between desire and constraint. The pattern is relatively fixed and does not apply freely to all verbs.

Examples

  1. 上司の失敗を指摘したいが、立場上言うに言えない。 I want to point out my boss's mistake, but my position makes it impossible to say.
  2. ここまで進めたプロジェクトは引くに引けない状況だ。 The project has come too far to back out now.
  3. 友人の善意による手料理は食べるに食べられなかった。 My friend's home cooking made with good intentions was impossible to eat, yet I couldn't refuse.

Don't Say

  • 走るに走るない。(Using ない instead of the potential negative form 走れない — the second verb must be in the potential negative) → 走るに走れない。
  • 言うで言えない。(Using で instead of に — the linking particle must be に in this fixed pattern) → 言うに言えない。

Origin & History

An emphatic reduplication pattern where the verb repeats with に (purpose particle) linking the two. The structure literally reads 'for the purpose of doing X, one cannot do X' — highlighting the gap between intent and ability.
