Officially established in 1993 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The name 道の駅 (road station) is modelled after 鉄道の駅 (railway station), emphasising that roads deserve rest points too. The network has grown to over 1,200 stations as of 2024.
