切ない
Meaning
Painful; heartrending; bittersweet. A deep emotional ache, often from longing or sadness.
An i-adjective describing a poignant, bittersweet emotional pain — the kind felt from unrequited love, nostalgia, or separation. Unlike 悲しい (sad), 切ない has a more complex emotional texture that can include beauty in the sadness. Very common in song lyrics, literature, and describing romantic feelings. Conjugates as a standard i-adjective: 切なくて, 切なかった.
