Pronunciation /joː.kaɪ/

Meaning

Dissolution; melting; the process by which a substance is dissolved into a solvent to form a solution, or more broadly, something being broken down and absorbed.

In chemistry, 溶解 describes the process of a solute (溶質) dispersing in a solvent (溶媒) to form a homogeneous mixture. It differs from melting (融解) in that the substance disperses into another medium rather than merely changing phase. 溶解度 (solubility) measures the maximum amount that can dissolve. Also used figuratively to describe the breakdown of boundaries, identities, or structures.

Examples

  1. 食塩が水に溶解するとナトリウムイオンと塩化物イオンに分かれる。 When table salt dissolves in water, it separates into sodium ions and chloride ions.
  2. 温度が上がるほど多くの物質が溶解しやすくなるが、気体の場合は逆の傾向がある。 Most substances dissolve more readily as temperature rises, though for gases the tendency is reversed.
  3. グローバル化によって国家間の文化的境界が溶解しつつあると指摘する研究者もいる。 Some researchers point out that globalisation is causing the cultural boundaries between nations to dissolve.
