淘汰
Meaning
Natural selection; elimination of the unfit; weeding out. The process by which weaker or inferior elements are removed through competition or natural forces.
Originally a biological term associated with Darwinian theory, 淘汰 is now widely used in business and social commentary to describe competitive elimination. 自然淘汰 (natural selection) and 市場による淘汰 (market-driven elimination) are common collocations. The verb forms are 淘汰される (to be weeded out) and 淘汰する (to eliminate). It carries a neutral or clinical tone rather than a moral one.
