Stocktaking; inventory check. A systematic count and valuation of all goods or assets held.

It is conducted periodically — often at year-end — to reconcile physical stock with book records. Metaphorically, 棚卸しをする means to take stock of one's skills, strengths, or past experiences, making it common in career counselling and self-development contexts.
