基軸通貨
Meaning
Key currency; reserve currency. A currency that is widely used in international trade, investment, and foreign exchange reserves, most notably the US dollar.
The 基軸通貨 underpins the global financial system — countries hold it as foreign exchange reserves and use it to price commodities such as oil. The US dollar has held this role since the Bretton Woods Agreement of 1944. The concept is central to discussions of exchange rate policy, currency wars, and geopolitical financial power. 基軸通貨国 (key currency nation) enjoys the 'exorbitant privilege' of borrowing cheaply on world markets.
