Japanese JLPT N1 Vocabulary Japanese ★★ 2/5 formal いかんなくikannaku
Reading いかんなく
Romaji ikannaku
Kanji breakdown 遺 (i) — leave behind; 憾 (kan) — regret
Pronunciation /i.kaɴ.na.kɯ/

Meaning

Fully; to the utmost; completely; without reserve. Used to describe doing something to its fullest extent.

An adverb formed from 遺憾 (regret) + なく (without). Paradoxically, 遺憾なく means 'without leaving any regret' — i.e., fully, completely, without holding back. The phrase 遺憾なく発揮する (to demonstrate to the fullest) is highly common. It is the positive counterpart of the noun 遺憾, meaning performance or expression is so complete that nothing was left undone.
