Meaning

Saturated state; saturation. A condition in which a substance has absorbed or dissolved to its maximum capacity at a given temperature and pressure.

Used in chemistry and physics to describe solutions, vapours, and magnetic materials at maximum capacity. A saturated solution (飽和溶液) cannot dissolve additional solute under prevailing conditions. In meteorology, the atmosphere reaches 飽和状態 when relative humidity hits 100%, leading to condensation. The term is also used figuratively in economics and marketing to describe an oversupplied market.

Examples

  1. 砂糖を水に溶かし続けると、やがて溶けなくなる飽和状態に達する。 If you keep dissolving sugar in water, it eventually reaches a saturated state where no more will dissolve.
  2. 大気が水蒸気で飽和状態になると、雲や霧が発生しやすくなる。 When the atmosphere becomes saturated with water vapour, clouds and fog tend to form.
  3. スマートフォン市場はすでに飽和状態にあり、新規参入は困難とされている。 The smartphone market is already in a saturated state, making new market entry considered difficult.
