~とかで

Japanese Grammar Intermediate Japanese ★★★ 3/5 casual とかでtoka de
Reading とかで
Romaji toka de
Formation Clause (plain form) + とかで + Result/Situation

Meaning

A conjunction used to give an uncertain or hearsay reason for something. It means 'I heard it's because...' or 'apparently because...' and conveys that the speaker is not fully sure of the reason.

とかで combines the quotative approximation とか (something like, or so) with the particle で (because/by means of) to present a reason that the speaker is not entirely certain about. It signals that the information is secondhand, vague, or only partially remembered. This pattern is common in everyday conversation when relaying reasons heard from others or when the speaker does not want to commit to the accuracy of the stated reason. It is more casual and uncertain than ので or から, and less formal than とのことで. The vagueness can also serve as a politeness strategy, avoiding overly direct explanations.

Examples

  1. 電車が遅れているとかで会社に遅刻した。 Apparently the train was delayed, so I was late to work.
  2. 体調が悪いとかで今日は休みらしい。 I heard they're not feeling well, so apparently they're off today.
  3. 工事中とかで道が通れなかった。 Apparently there's construction, so the road was blocked.
