~のこと

Japanese Grammar Intermediate Japanese ★★★★ 4/5 neutral のことno koto
Reading のこと
Romaji no koto
Formation Noun + のこと + (Particle) + Verb of emotion/cognition

Meaning

A structure meaning 'about X' or 'things relating to X.' It turns a noun into the topic or object of discussion, thought, or feeling.

のこと is used to indicate that the preceding noun is the subject of one's thoughts, feelings, knowledge, or discussion. While sometimes omittable, のこと adds emotional weight or clarifies that one is thinking about a person or topic rather than interacting with them directly. For example, 彼のことが好き emphasizes emotional feelings about the person, whereas 彼が好き could be ambiguous. It is especially common with verbs of cognition and emotion like 考える, 思う, 知る, 心配する, and 好き. In some fixed expressions, のこと is obligatory, such as あなたのことだから (knowing you as I do). It also appears in the pattern XのことをYと呼ぶ (to call X by the name Y).

Examples

  1. 母のことをいつも心配している。 I am always worried about my mother.
  2. 日本のことをもっと知りたいです。 I want to learn more about Japan.
  3. 彼のことが気になって仕方がない。 I can't stop thinking about him.
