Meaning

A phrase used when something someone mentioned triggers a thought, association, or memory. It means 'speaking of...' or 'when you say...'

と言うと is used reactively in conversation when a word or topic that someone has just mentioned prompts the speaker to think of something related. It functions as a conversational pivot, similar to 'speaking of...' or 'when you mention...' in English. This pattern is extremely natural in dialogue and shows active listening. It can also be used to seek clarification about what someone means by a particular word. と言うと differs from と言えば, which is more about general associations with a topic, while と言うと is more immediate and reactive to what was just said in the conversation.
