には (in order to)

Japanese Grammar Intermediate Japanese ★★★★ 4/5 neutral にはniwa
Reading には
Romaji niwa
Formation Verb (dictionary form) + には + Statement about condition/requirement

Meaning

A compound particle combining に and は, used to express a purpose or condition needed to achieve something. It conveys 'in order to do X' or 'for X to happen, Y is necessary.'

には as a purpose marker differs from simple に because the は adds a topicalizing or contrastive nuance, framing the purpose clause as the topic of discussion. The most common pattern is Verb dictionary form + には + condition/requirement. It is frequently used to state what is needed to accomplish a goal: 合格するには毎日勉強しなければならない (In order to pass, you must study every day). This differs from ために, which is more straightforward about purpose. には implies 'when it comes to doing X' and often leads to a statement about requirements, conditions, or evaluations. It also appears in ~にはちょっと (for doing X, it's a bit ...) to express that something falls short of a standard.

Examples

  2. このビルの屋上に行くには、特別な許可が必要です。 To go to the rooftop of this building, special permission is required.
  3. 健康を維持するには、バランスの取れた食事と運動が欠かせない。 In order to maintain your health, a balanced diet and exercise are essential.
