Meaning

Expresses the purpose or goal behind an action, often with the nuance that the speaker acts in a way to bring about a desired result or to avoid an undesired one.

This purposive ように is used when the goal involves a non-volitional outcome or a potential verb — situations where ために would be unnatural. For example, with potential verbs (聞こえるように大きな声で話した — I spoke loudly so that they could hear), ように is required because the ability to hear is not directly controllable. It also pairs with ない-form for preventive purposes (忘れないようにメモした — I took notes so I wouldn't forget). While ために is used with volitional verbs for direct purpose, ように covers indirect purpose where the subject of the purpose clause may differ from the main clause.
