~のに (2) (for the purpose of ~)
Meaning
Expresses the purpose, process, or requirement for doing something. The の nominalises the preceding verb, and に marks it as the purpose or context for the main clause.
This のに differs from the contrastive のに meaning 'although.' Here, の turns a verb into a noun phrase, and に indicates purpose or circumstance — essentially 'for doing X' or 'in the process of doing X.' It frequently appears with expressions of time, money, effort, or necessity: この漢字を覚えるのに時間がかかった (It took time to memorise this kanji). It can also express what is needed: 料理を作るのに材料が必要だ (Ingredients are needed for cooking). Unlike ために, which states direct volitional purpose, のに emphasises the process or requirement involved rather than the intention.
Examples
- この仕事を終わらせるのに三日かかった。 It took three days to finish this work.
- 日本語を勉強するのにいい本を探している。 I'm looking for a good book for studying Japanese.
- 駅まで歩くのに十五分かかります。 It takes fifteen minutes to walk to the station.
