~のに (2) (for the purpose of ~)

Japanese Grammar Basic Japanese ★★★★ 4/5 neutral のにnoni
Reading のに
Romaji noni
Formation Verb (dictionary form) + のに + Main clause

Meaning

Expresses the purpose, process, or requirement for doing something. The の nominalises the preceding verb, and に marks it as the purpose or context for the main clause.

This のに differs from the contrastive のに meaning 'although.' Here, の turns a verb into a noun phrase, and に indicates purpose or circumstance — essentially 'for doing X' or 'in the process of doing X.' It frequently appears with expressions of time, money, effort, or necessity: この漢字を覚えるのに時間がかかった (It took time to memorise this kanji). It can also express what is needed: 料理を作るのに材料が必要だ (Ingredients are needed for cooking). Unlike ために, which states direct volitional purpose, のに emphasises the process or requirement involved rather than the intention.

Examples

  1. この仕事を終わらせるのに三日かかった。 It took three days to finish this work.
  2. 日本語を勉強するのにいい本を探している。 I'm looking for a good book for studying Japanese.
  3. 駅まで歩くのに十五分かかります。 It takes fifteen minutes to walk to the station.
