で (limit)

Japanese Grammar Basic Japanese ★★★★ 4/5 neutral de
Reading

Formation Time/Amount/Quantity + で + Verb/State

Meaning

A particle that indicates the boundary at which something ends, or the total amount of time, money, or quantity required for something. It sets a limit or scope for an action or state.

This で marks limits in two related ways. First, it sets a time or event boundary: 五時で閉まる (closes at five — five being the cutoff), 今日で終わりです (it ends as of today). Second, it marks quantities like cost, number, or duration: 三百円で買える (can buy for 300 yen), 三人で持ち上げた (lifted by three people), 一時間で着く (arrive in one hour). The common thread is that で defines the extent or scope within which something is accomplished or constrained. This differs from に for time, which marks a point when something occurs. Compare: 五時に来る (come at five) versus 五時で終わる (end at five — the limit).

Examples

  1. このケーキは五百円で買えます。 You can buy this cake for 500 yen.
  2. 授業は三時で終わります。 Class ends at three o'clock.
  3. 三十分で駅に着きました。 I arrived at the station in thirty minutes.
