五月雨
意味
Early-summer rain; continuous or sporadic rain during the early summer rainy season.
A classical Japanese term (yamato-kotoba) for the prolonged rains of early summer, roughly corresponding to the 梅雨 (tsuyu) rainy season in June and early July. The reading さみだれ is irregular — the kanji literally mean 'fifth month rain' using the archaic lunar calendar. Frequent in classical waka and haiku with a nostalgic, literary quality. Modern everyday speech uses 梅雨; 五月雨式に (in a drawn-out, sporadic manner) survives as a set expression.
