復古
意味
Restoration; a return to old customs or systems; revival of the past. Applied to political or cultural movements that seek to restore earlier forms.
復古 carries a dual nuance: it can be neutral or positive (restoring beloved traditions) or critical (reverting to outdated, reactionary ways). The Meiji Restoration's ideology was framed partly as 王政復古 (restoration of imperial rule), using 復古 in a politically charged sense. In cultural contexts, 復古調 (retro style) describes aesthetics that deliberately evoke earlier eras. Not to be confused with 復興 (rebuilding/recovery), which implies rebuilding after destruction.
