唯 rarely appears alone in modern spoken Chinese; it functions mainly in formal writing and set phrases. 唯有 = only by/if; 唯一 = the only one; 唯独 = the sole exception. Also appears in philosophical compounds: 唯物主义 (materialism), 唯心主义 (idealism). The idiom 唯唯诺诺 describes obsequious, yes-man compliance.

Origen e historia
Classical Chinese character. 唯 = 口 (mouth) + 隹 (short-tailed bird). Originally a particle of affirmation or response. Its meaning shifted in classical usage to indicate exclusivity — 'only this and nothing else.' Retains this literary flavour in modern Mandarin.
