只要 (as long as)
含义
The conjunction 只要 means 'as long as' or 'provided that,' introducing a sufficient condition. It is typically paired with 就 in the result clause to form the pattern 只要...就..., meaning 'as long as X, then Y.'
只要 presents a minimum or sufficient condition — if the condition is met, the result will follow. It differs from 只有...才... (only if), which presents a necessary condition. With 只要, the speaker implies that meeting the stated condition is enough to guarantee the outcome. 就 in the result clause can sometimes be omitted in casual speech, but including it makes the logical connection clearer. 只要 can also be used with negative conditions: 只要不迟到就行 (as long as you're not late, it's fine). This pattern is extremely useful for giving reassurance, making promises, or stating requirements.
