Meaning

By chance; coincidentally; accidentally. Describes something that happened unexpectedly or without planning.

An adverb describing unplanned, coincidental events. Used when something fortunate or notable happens without intention: たまたま見つけた (found it by chance), たまたま会った (ran into someone by coincidence). Differs from 偶然 (guuzen), which is more formal. Can suggest luck: たまたまうまくいった (it happened to work out). Sometimes written 偶々 in kanji, though the hiragana form is far more common.
