余震
Meaning
Aftershock. A smaller earthquake that occurs in the same region after a larger main earthquake, as the crust adjusts to the stress changes caused by the primary event.
A compound noun used extensively in Japanese seismology and daily life, given Japan's position on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Following a major 本震 (main earthquake), 余震 can continue for weeks or months, sometimes reaching magnitudes strong enough to cause further damage. Japanese disaster agencies issue 余震情報 to inform the public of expected frequency and intensity. The word is among the most practically important in Japanese disaster vocabulary.
