抑圧
Meaning
Oppression; suppression; repression. The use of authority or force to control, restrain, or silence a person, group, or expression of will.
Used in political, psychological, and social contexts. Politically, it describes state-level silencing of dissent, minorities, or civil liberties. In psychology, 抑圧 corresponds to Freudian 'repression' — the unconscious exclusion of painful impulses from conscious awareness. The agent performing 抑圧 is often a power structure; the verb form is 抑圧する and the agentive form 抑圧者 (oppressor).
