平和主義
Meaning
Pacifism; peace principle. The doctrine that disputes between nations should be settled by peaceful means and that war and violence are unjustifiable.
In Japan, 平和主義 is one of the three founding principles of the 1947 Constitution, alongside 国民主権 (popular sovereignty) and 基本的人権の尊重 (respect for fundamental human rights). Article 9 of the Constitution, which renounces war and the threat of force, is the constitutional embodiment of this principle. Debates about revising Article 9 are framed in terms of whether they undermine 平和主義.
